Final Recital of the Academy’s 3rd Year Players

In 2015, the Heinz Peter and Annelotte Koch Foundation enabled the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen to establish an academy for young musicians whose goal was to prepare excellent, visionary instrumentalists for successful careers in the cultural landscape of the 21st century – inspired by a world class orchestra. During a two-year training programme, the young academy members are closely integrated into orchestral life and are involved in all the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen’s major projects. In addition to concerts with renowned soloists and CD recordings, they are also involved in Future Lab concerts. The highlight is undoubtedly the work with principal conductor Paavo Järvi, which may even include joining the orchestra on international tours.

The full training curriculum encompasses much more: masterclasses with specialists in historical performance practice and chamber music as well as individual lessons with the orchestral musicians. The academy members are also involved in contemporary music projects and may perform their own concerts and CD recordings. Each academy member has an orchestra member as their own personal mentor for the duration of their academy membership. In addition to this, the young musicians deal with questions about the future of classical concert performance in practice-orientated seminars and workshops with international experts and study visits. The focus is as much on management topics, social demands or musicians‘ health as it is on artistic-interdisciplinary themes.

Each academy year gives a Final Recital, which the academy members organise entirely on their own – from fundraising to marketing to technical production and of course musical performance – as an example of the skills they have acquired in the course of their two years training. Unfortunately, the 3rd Final Recital (2019-2022) fell victim to the pandemic – as did many others; standard concert routines were completely impossible during that time. This was the inspiration for the instrumentalists’ digital project ›ent:stehen‹. The four academy players – Alma Micke, Teresa Simone, Nadja Reich und Sebastian Steinhilber – have broken new ground in their decision to produce a piece incorporating elements of concert, performance and film. They also successfully applied for third-party funding to finance their final project and now look proudly on the fruits of their labour.

See for yourself what moved the young musicians during this difficult time and how they have translated these thoughts, ideas and feelings into art.
