Noble, charming, unpretentious, modest – ultimately, Herbert Blomstedt has always represented that type of artist whose professional competence and natural authority render superfluous any added artificial accentuation. His work as a conductor is inextricably linked with his religious and human ethos. Correspondingly, his interpretations combine great musical accuracy and analytical precision with a soulfulness that brings the music vibrantly to life. As a result, throughout the long years of his career, he has earned the unreserved respect of the musical world.

Educated in Uppsala, New York, Darmstadt and Basel, this Swedish conductor gave his debut in 1954 with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, followed by positions as Chief Conductor with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Staatskapelle Dresden. Subsequently, he became Music Director at the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, was Chief Conductor with the NDR Symphony Orchestra and Kapellmeister with the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig. His former orchestras in San Francisco, Leipzig, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Dresden have bestowed on him the title of Honorary Conductor, as have both the Bamberger Symphoniker and the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo.
At over 90 years of age, Herbert Blomstedt still stands with enormous presence, full of vigour and artistic drive, on the podium of all the leading international orchestras.
