Matthias Goerne is one of the most versatile and sought-after vocalists of his register. A native of Weimar, he studied with Hans-Joachim Beyer, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Today, Goerne is a frequent guest at renowned festivals and on the world’s principal opera stages, including the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera New York and La Scala in Milan. He has collaborated with nearly all eminent conductors and leading orchestras all over the world.
His broad spectrum of operatic roles ranges from the big roles of Wagner and Strauss to Alban Berg. Goerne has also earned himself an excellent reputation internationally as an ambassador of the German ›Kunstlieder‹. The past seasons include a series of song recitals with such outstanding pianists as Leif Ove Andsnes and Daniil Trifonov, in New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Boulez-Saal Berlin and London’s Wigmore Hall to name a few. The baritone singer has received prestigious awards for his many recordings, including a ›Grammy Award‹ and the ›Echo Klassik‹. In 2017 he completed recordings of Bach cantatas, Schumann songs and scenes from Wagner operas. Matthias Goerne also has more than a passing interest in discovering and debuting major works of modern and contemporary music. He is an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London and in the 2017/18 season Artist in Residence at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The Brahms Requiem with The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen is among the concert highlights this year. For the 2018/19 season, he has been invited by the New York Philharmonic to perform ten concerts as Artist in Residence.
