3rd Mini Subscription Concert I

Works by Schubert and Beethoven

He is not fazed by anything. Not by New Music, not by the heavyweights of the repertoire. Pianist Igor Levit, who was educated for the most part in Hanover and graduated top of the class, is not only one of the shooting stars among today’s young generation of pianists: he also has plenty to say – both on and off the podium. Driven by a permanent sense of curiosity and relying on his qualities as a musician, Levit has over the past few years played his way to the forefront of the world’s major concert podiums both at home and abroad – including Bremen, where, together with old master Sir Roger Norrington, he will perform one of Beethoven’s piano concertos. The two have got to know and appreciate one another over a considerable time. Norrington, the wry Englishman, himself once a pioneer of historically informed performance practice, is a regular guest conductor with The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and this time will present one of his favourite composers: Franz Schubert.

Sir Roger Norrington played the violin and sang from a young age. After studying History and English Literature, he gained several years’ experience of top-class amateur music making, before returning to musical studies at the Royal College of Music in London and the start of his professional career as a singer and conductor. In 1962 he founded the Schütz Choir.

In 1969, Roger Norrington was appointed Music Director of the Kent Opera. He founded the London Classical Players in 1978 in order to study historically informed performance practices on period musical instruments from the time between 1750 and 1900. As a guest conductor he has worked at the Covent Garden Opera House, the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras as well as the New York, Boston, Chicago and Cleveland orchestras, among others.

Sir Roger Norrington was Principal Conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR) and of the Camerata Salzburg. At both locations he established a historically informed performance style in a ›modern‹ setting. With The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen he has enjoyed a long and friendly collaboration.
