Summer in Lesmona – Grand Orchestra Concert

Open-air summer classic festival

Works by Smetana, Bregovic, Dvořák and Bacewicz

Start: 8.30pm, doors open: 6.30pm

Musical obsession and the entire spectrum of extreme emotions: in short, music that both touches the soul gets the toes tapping – the unmistakable Balkan sound of Goran Bregovic And His Wedding & Funeral Band! Together with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, folk music’s world star and his band unite for a crossover experience in which no mountain will remain unmoved. In an exciting contrast – and typical for ›Summer in Lesmona‹ – there will be classical music highlights. In the late evening, a large screen cinema will bring a romantic close to the evening with the film adaptation of the epistolatory novel ›Summer in Lesmona‹ with Katja Riemann:

Once one of Eastern Europe’s greatest rock stars, Goran Bregovic has championed demanding, challenging contemporary music in which the rousing wind instruments take centre stage and which, thanks to the propitious use of voices as instruments, is also very melodic.

Whether live or recorded, he is THE pioneer of southern European music and, with his band Wedding & Funeral, takes his audiences on a breathtaking journey along the Balkans and far beyond.

Known as a composer of contemporary music and film music (in particular for the films of Emir Kusturicas), Bregovic appears not only at many major festivals but also in the world’s most renowned concert halls and multiple appearances at both the Alte Oper Frankfurt and the Köln Philharmonie have sold out. In addition to his 9-strong band Wedding & Funeral and a larger formation with choir and string quartet, there are also projects with orchestra.

Conductor

Nil Venditti

The Italian-Turkish conductor Nil Venditti has been forging close relationships with many international orchestras in recent years. Highlights of recent seasons include collaborations with the Orchestre de l’Opéra national de Paris, the Dresden Philharmonie, the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, the Irish National Opera and the Orchestra della Toscana, of which she was Principal Guest Conductor until May 2022.

Alongside her strong affinity for the core classical repertoire of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and her devotion to conducting opera, Nil Venditti also shows a great interest in contemporary programmes. In recent seasons, she has performed works by Fazil Say, Fabien Waksman, Lepo Sumera and Caroline Shaw in particular. This conductor also uses unusual formats to attract new target groups to classical music. In June 2022, Nil Venditti conducted the Irish National Opera’s first virtual reality community opera ›Out of the Ordinary‹, which was developed for and with people from all over Ireland and which places communities at the centre of the opera’s creative process. Nil Venditti made her acclaimed debut with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen conducting at Musikfest Bremen and returned to the orchestra’s own festival ›Summer in Lesmona‹ the following year.

Orchid Kammerchor Bremen

Keno Hankel Chorusmaster

The ›Orchid Chamber Choir Bremen‹ is a project ensemble which was founded by the Bremer composer and conductor Keno Hankel in 2022. The Chamber Choir works on atypical programmes where the traditional resonates with the contemporary.

Concerts with the title ›Mensch in der Natur‹ will take place in Lilienthal and Bremen on 11th and 12th November 2023, at which there will also be premieres of tonal choral music.

The 2024 season will see a cooperation with the ensemble ›Musica getutscht‹ during which Emilio de Cavalieri’s opera ›Representations of Body and Soul‹ (from 1600) will be performed.
