Named ›Orchestra of the Year‹ for the second time

Opus Klassik for the dream team

Following their recognition as ›Orchestra of the Year‹ by Gramophone, Europe’s most prestigious classical music magazine, in London last year, where they surpassed renowned orchestras like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris and the Berlin Philharmonic, The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and its Artistic Director Paavo Järvi have now been awarded the Opus Klassik. This year, the Kammerphilharmonie and its principal conductor were honoured once more as ›Orchestra of the Year‹ for their renditions of Haydn’s London Symphonies Nos. 101 and 103 at the Opus Klassik Gala in Berlin on 13th October 2024. It’s a splendid affirmation of the collaborative efforts between the orchestra and the renowned conductor, who have previously made their mark with their cycles of Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms. This is the 11th OPUS Klassik award, including its precursor, the ECHO Classic, for The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.

Special honour

Senate Medal for Paavo Järvi

»Paavo Järvi and The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen have earned our city a place on the global musical map,« said Bremen’s mayor and senator for culture Andreas Bovenschulte on presenting the Senate Medal for Art and Science to Paavo Järvi.

Paavo Järvi has been Artistic Director of The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen since 2004. At a presentation ceremony held at Bremen City Hall at the end of November, the Estonian conductor was awarded this special distinction for his services to the orchestra and Bremen’s cultural sector during his two-decade tenure.

Joseph Haydn, The London Symphonies

The first joint recordings of the Haydn symphonies caused an international sensation last year. The prestigious ›Orchestra of the Year 2023‹ award from the British classical music magazine ›Gramophone‹ was followed this year by the Opus Klassik award as ›Orchestra of the Year‹ for the Haydn recordings.

Now the orchestra and its principal conductor are going one better: the double CD featuring Haydn’s symphonies Nos. 94 and 99 as well as 95 and 98 is now globally available in stores and across all major streaming channels. Our recommendation: the beautifully designed Bremen special edition exclusively available from our customer service centre and in the webshop.

With the current project around the ›London Symphonies‹, the internationally acclaimed ›Dream Team‹ has now set itself the goal of dusting off the composer’s image which is often considered somewhat staid, tickling out his unique musical sense of humour and creating »more Haydn love«. As part of an exciting TV documentary, NDR has been shadowing the orchestra and exploring the emergence of this new Haydn feeling. In the 60-minute documentary ›the Haydn-Expedition‹ (now available in the ARD media library) the film team accompanies the orchestra and conductor during studio recordings and concerts, highlighting this focused, creative and enjoyable collaboration: Haydn – fresher than ever!

Tarmo Peltokoski received exclusive contract

At October 2023, Tarmo Peltokoski was awarded the Opus Klassik and the title ›Young Artist of the Year‹ for his joint recording of Oskar Böhme’s ›Trumpet Concerto op. 18‹ with trumpeter Matthias Höfs and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Shortly after this 23-year-old has signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, according to whom Peltokoski has secured a place among the »leading conductors of the day«. Grammophon President Dr. Clemens Trautmann is also impressed, »His energy and natural authority are stunning. Tarmo’s sense for hidden musical subtleties and voices in otherwise familiar scores is deeply fascinating.«

Tarmo Peltokoski has recorded his first album – Mozart’s Symphonies Nos. 35, 36 and 40 – with our orchestra. It is due to be released by Deutsche Grammophon in May 2024. »It is a gift to perform Mozart with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and a dream to record these three symphonies« explained this newly appointed exclusive artist at the signing ceremony. The Kammerphilharmonie discovered Peltokoski in 2021 thanks to a workshop organised during the pandemic and was enthusiastic about this extraordinarily multi-talented young Finn from the very beginning. Tarmo Peltokoski has been Principal Guest Conductor since the beginning of 2022, the first holder of a position created especially for this purpose and unprecedented in the orchestra’s long history.

Obituary

Dr Klaus Brandmeyer

It is with great sadness and heartfelt gratitude that we bid farewell to Dr Klaus Brandmeyer, our long-time associate, valuable advisor and former member of the Board of Trustees.

Klaus Brandmeyer was regarded as an unrivalled authority on brand management and brand positioning and as a gifted rhetorician. The media even liked to refer to him as the »brand pope«. With his engaging nature and charismatic personality, he also left an indelible mark on the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen as an enthusiastic concertgoer and in his one-time role as a member of our Board of Trustees. Above all however, Klaus Brandmeyer was also the »brand pope« for us. With his outstanding expertise and passion for the orchestra, he was instrumental in the development of the ›Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen‹ brand and played a decisive role in shaping it.

Klaus Brandmeyer, who was still active in his brand consultancy agency until just a few years ago, has now passed away at the age of 84. Our thoughts are with his family.

London cheering at the BBC Proms

There was a special buzz in the air on this concert evening at the Royal Albert Hall, even prompting the audience to sing along during the encore: for their performance at the legendary BBC Proms, The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen together with their ›Artistic Best Friend‹ Pekka Kuusisto and Swedish citternist Ale Carr delivered a rousing classical music extravaganza. Under the baton of the charismatic conductor and violinist, their performance of Andrea Tarrodi’s onomatopoeic string piece ›Birds of Paradise‹ together with an unconventional interpretation of Beethoven’s First Symphony and Vivaldi’s ›Four Seasons‹ produced a »firework of improvisation« (BR Klassik). Such an abundance of musical passion not only met with the rapturous applause of the London audience in the hall, but was also enthusiastically followed during the public live transmission on Bremen’s station forecourt.

Kurier, Vienna

»… The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen is without a doubt one of the most interesting ensembles around today.«
