Young world stars

2nd First Night subscription concert

Works by Kodály, Schumann and Mendelssohn

When the conductor and soloist of the evening not only both hail from the north, but are also the same age and close friends, harmony on stage is all but a given! Daniel Lozakovich and Tarmo Peltokoski are performing together for the first time in Bremen, bringing their take on a violin concerto previously regarded as problematic. Even Robert Schumann’s closest associates dismissed the piece, written three years before his death, as being flawed in its novelty, the product of his declining mental health. Today, the concerto is celebrated as one of the most important works of the Romantic period. Daniel Lozakovich, who debuted at just nine years old, is now an exclusive Warner Classics artist. Tarmo Peltokoski continues his Mendelssohn series with the Third Symphony, known as the ‘Scottish’, inspired by his travels to the northern British Isles a few years after composing his ‘Italian’ Symphony. The evening opens with Zoltán Kodály’s lively folk dances from Galánta.
