The joys of discovery

3rd First Night subscription concert

Works by Tüür, Bruch and Mendelssohn

Max Bruch was born in Bergisch Gladbach – a stone’s throw away from Cologne – a Rhinelander through and through. His violin concerto could appear on any album in the series ›Music for the Millions‹, yet Bruch has much more to offer. This great but underrated composer left his mark everywhere – not just along the Rhine but also in the pages of western musical history itself. The rarely performed double concerto is a veritable jewel. Composed in 1911 it stands entirely in the shadow of the more famous violin concerto. Two accomplished soloists are required for this work; Matthew Hunt and Nils Mönkemeyer are true luminaries of their instruments. Hunt has been a member of The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen since 2007 and Mönkemeyer is appearing for the first time in Bremen. The Bruch concerto will be flanked by two works which also merit greater attention: ›Flamma‹ by Erkki-Sven Tüür – premiered in 2011 – and Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 1 – often overshadowed by his later symphonies.

*After Paavo Järvi regrettably had to cancel his concerts on 28th  29th and 30th March 2019 due to ill health, Jonathan Bloxham has very kindly agreed to step in at short notice and conduct an unchanged programme at all three performances.*

Programme

    • Erkki-Sven Tüür (*1959)
    • ›Flamma‹
    • Max Bruch (1838–1920)
    • Double concerto for clarinet and viola in E minor op. 88
    • Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847)
    • Symphony No. 1 in C minor op. 11

Conductor

Jonathan Bloxham

Born in 1988, the conductor Jonathan Bloxham is an unusually versatile artist whose »innate musicality« is very much esteemed. Alongside his »deep knowledge and understand of the symphonic repertoire« (Paavo Järvi), Bloxham also has great passion for contemporary music.

This British artist began his musical career as a cellist. Having already won several awards, he gave his solo concerto debut in the Philharmonie Berlin. In his role as conductor, he works with well-known ensembles, most recently with the City Chamber Orchestra Hong Kong, with the RTE Concert Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and, as cover conductor with the New York Philharmonic. Until 2018, Bloxham was also Assistant Conductor with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. In Summer 2019 he assisted in Glyndebourne with “Rusalka” and in 2020 he will be directing productions of “Madame Butterfly”. Bloxham is also Founder and Artistic Director of the Northern Chords Festivals.

This season, debuts will see him with The Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxemburg and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Bloxham is a founder member of the Busch Trio, with whom he performed until 2015 and during which time it won several awards. He continues to play chamber music with some of the most renowned musicians. Many concertgoers local to Bremen will remember Bloxham’s thrilling debut at the 2018 ›Summer in Lesmona‹ for many years to come.

As soloist, Matthew has recently performed with conductors such as Trevor Pinnock, Clemens Schulte, Pekka Kuusisto, as well as with orchestras such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra Collective, the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, the Estonian festival Orchestra and as guest performer with the Berlin Philharmonic in the Berlin Kammermusik Saal. He is a passionate chamber musician and his partners to date include Meta4-, Chiarascuro-, Pavel Haas, the Elias Quartet as well as Pekka Kuusisto, Alina Ibragimova, Thomas Adès, Nicholas Altstaedt, Steven Isserlis, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Alexander Lanquich and the jazz pianist Iiro Rantala. Matthew Hunt’s recording of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, which has been greatly praised by the critics, has been hailed by BBC Music Magazine as a »seminal recording of this frequently recorded work«.
