Works by Schubert and Schumann
The 2026 musical year wraps up with another milestone in the Schubert project with Paavo Järvi, marking a long-overdue reunion with The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen’s distinguished musical friend, Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk. Schubert’s Overture “In the Italian Style” in D major, D 590, is paired with its sister piece, the Overture in C major, D 591. Both works were influenced by the Rossini fever sweeping Vienna after 1816 and in all probability also by Schubert’s hope for an opera commission that could bring him greater fame. Symphony No. 2, composed a few years earlier, showcases the emerging talent of a 17-year-old finding his own voice amid such luminaries as Haydn and Beethoven. Schumann’s unconventional cello concerto, which he titled “Concert Piece”, emerged during an especially productive period, written in just two weeks as a continuous piece without pause between the movements
