Fairy tale from times gone by

5th First night subscription concert

Works by Dvořák, Mozart and Watkins

One who »fearlessly leaps through dangerous terrain« – this is how the Huffington Post described the young horn player Ben Goldscheider. For his debut with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, the British rising star will not only be performing Mozart’s 4th Horn Concerto, but also a contemporary composition, the German premiere of the Horn Concerto which was composed for him by his compatriot Huw Watkins. Watkins has already proven on several occasions how cleverly he is able to utilise the velvety, romantic sound of this wind instrument for his finely nuanced compositions. The framework for this horn expedition is provided by two symphonic poems, which are among Dvořak’s last orchestral works. Inspired by a collection of poems by the folklorist and historian Karl Jaromir Erben, two fascinating scores in which the fantastical and the unreal burst into life, making humanity’s depths resound.
