Violist Lawrence Power is one of today’s foremost recitalists, soloists and chamber musicians. His eloquent artistry and penetrating musicianship were acknowledged in 2015 when he was shortlisted for the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist Award.
Power has been a regular guest performer with orchestras of the highest international calibre, including The Royal Concertgebouw, The Bayerischer Rundfunk and the BBC Scottish, Chicago and Boston Symphony orchestras. He has been Artist in Residence at the Bergen Philharmonic and has also established a strong presence as concerto soloist in Australia. He regularly collaborates with the violinist Maxim Vengerov and has developed an acclaimed duo partnership with pianist Simon Crawford-Phillips.
Power is a fervent champion of contemporary music and has given several UK and world premieres, some of which were works written for him, including Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Power Play, Julian Anderson’s Prayer and Huw Watkins’ Fantasy. Many of Power’s recordings have been nominated for Gramophone Awards and his three-disc Hindemith survey stands as a benchmark recording of the composer’s complete works for solo viola.
Power opened the 2014-15 season in New York’s Lincoln Center with Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with Joshua Bell and the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra. Lawrence Power has been Artistic Director of the English Chamber Orchestra Charitable Trust since May 2016 and launched his first London series with the English Chamber Orchestra at Kings Place in October the same year. He is also founder and Artistic Director of West Wycombe Chamber Music Festival.
