Works by Sibelius, Shostakovich and Beethoven

A reunion after ten years: in 2015, Anastasia Kobekina won the prestigious Tonali Competition for young artists in Hamburg and performed her prizewinner’s concert with The Deutsche Kammer­philharmonie Bremen. She returns as the soloist in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, written for his friend Mstislav Rostropovich. His characteristic sarcastic humour contrasts with deep introspection and sparkling virtuosity, featuring famous solos for horn and timpani. While there are autobiographical references, they are not essential to understanding the piece. The Deutsche Kammer­philharmonie Bremen’s Principal Guest Conductor, Tarmo Peltokoski, begins the evening with a piece of music from his homeland, Jean Sibelius’ ›Pelléas et Mélisande‹, a multi-part orchestral suite featuring excerpts from the incidental music to Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolist drama of forbidden love. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, composed during a particularly joyous period in his life, when he was newly in love and brimming with joie de vivre, was described by Robert Schumann as the »slender Greek maiden between two Nordic giants« (Symphonies 3 and 5).

Tarmo Peltokoski

»…talent of the century«, so described the Tagesspiegel Tarmo Peltokoski. This Finnish conductor was appointed ›Principal Guest Conductor‹ by the Deutsche Kammer­philharmonie Bremen in January 2022 – the first conductor to hold this position.

In recent seasons, Peltokoski has debuted at many major festivals, including the Rheingau Music Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, as well as in the great concert halls such as the Köln Philharmonie and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. In addition, he has given debuts with the hr-Sinfonieorchester, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Rotterdam Philharmonic. At just 22, Peltokoski conducted his first complete Ring Cycle as well as another significant Wagner work – Tristan und Isolde – at the Eurajoki Bel Canto Festival. In the same year, he was also appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest, Musical and Artistic Director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Designate of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.

In the 2022/23 season, Tarmo Peltokoski is due to conduct the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony, the RSB Berlin, The Hallé, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Göteborgs Symfoniker, San Diego Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the Hollywood Bowl.

In 2023 Tarmo Peltokoski was awarded the OPUS Klassik for his recording with the Deutsche Kammer­philharmonie Bremen.

In addition to piano and conducting, Peltokoski also studied composition and arranging and has a particular penchant for musical comedy and improvisation.

Violoncello

Anastasia Kobekina

Born in Ekaterinburg, Russia, Anastasia Kobekina is known for her breathtaking musicality and technique, her extraordinary versatility and infectious personality. After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory, she studied at Kronberg Academy in Germany, at Berlin College of the Arts and at the Paris Conservatory with Jerome Pernoo. She is currently completing postgraduate studies at Frankfurt College of Music and Performing Arts. With a broad repertoire, Anastasia Kobekina has established herself as one of the most exciting cellists of the younger generation.

She has already performed as soloist with world-renowned orchestras. Highlights of the 2023/24 season included concerts with the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich conducted by Paavo Järvi, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jakub Hrusa, the Orchester National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, the Orchester National de Belgique and appearances at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival and Rheingau Music Festival. As a chamber musician, she regularly performs with renowned artists such as Lars Vogt, Isabelle Faust, Fazıl Say, Gidon Kremer and András Schiff. This musician has also received numerous awards, most recently the Leonard Bernstein Award from the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival 2024. Her instrument, a 1698 Stradivarius cello is on generous loan from the Stradivari Foundation Habisreutinger.
