Sincere and Candid
5th First Night Subscription Concert
Works by Schubert and Mendelssohn
It’s not just his intellectual agility that’s remarkable. In every conversation, he has a knack of immediately putting things into their proper perspective, discovering surprising cross-links, asking questions, tracing relationships. In doing so, he’s often disarmingly frank – and this is also how he presents himself at the piano. Igor Levit occupies a special status among today’s young pianists. Someone of his stature doesn’t have to pretend or even adapt – terms he would anyway view with deep scepticism. As someone for whom candour and spontaneity are important aspects of music making, he is a regular guest in Bremen. With Florian Donderer, who conducts the orchestra as concert master, he can look back on a whole string of successful joint performances. Now the two Mendelssohn piano concertos are on the programme, two works frequently downplayed and degraded to entertainment music. With the artistic collaboration between Levit and Donderer, get ready to be convinced otherwise.
