Works by Wagner, Sibelius and Rachmaninoff

Igudesman & Joo, are not just the surnames of two exceptionally gifted classical musicians; this pair of names is also the globally recognized trademark of a unique musical and comedy duo. They have showcased their particular admiration for Rachmaninoff in the video clip ›Rachmaninoff Had Big Hands‹ which has garnered millions of views. The duo’s pianist, Hyung-ki Joo, is now proving in Bremen that they can also do serious with the renowned Second Piano Concerto, whose clarinet cantilena in the second movement inspired Eric Carmen’s hit ›All by myself‹. This music is timeless! The distinctive manner in which the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius engaged with the Romantic period is exemplified by his clear, almost classicist Third Symphony, composed just a few years after the piano concerto. The Principal Guest Conductor of The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Tarmo Peltokoski, will open the evening with the Prelude to Act 1 from Richard Wagner’s opera ›Lohengrin‹, once again demonstrating his profound enthusiasm for the music of this master of romantic opera.

Programme

    • Richard Wagner (1813–1883)
    • Prelude to Lohengrin WWV 75
    • Jean Sibelius (1865–1957)
    • Symphony No. 3 in C major op. 52
    • Sergej Rachmaninoff (1873–1943)
    • Piano concerto No. 2 in C minor op. 18
