Artistic Best Friend

4th Highlight Subscription Concert

Works by Britten, Purcell, Vasks and Sibelius

Sibelius, of course! Finland’s national composer, recognized in many other European countries as one of the most important composers of the 20th century. Pekka Kuusisto makes no secret of his love for his compatriot’s music. Every summer, Kuusisto directs his own festival near Sibelius’ residence Ainola. »It’s important to be aware of the roots of Sibelius’ music in Finnish folk music, although he sometimes tried to play down their significance slightly. But the way he assimilates these influences and shapes them into something distinctly his own is unique.« As well as Sibelius’ Third Symphony, which premiered in Helsinki in September 1907, in his second Bremen concert as ›Artistic Best Friend‹, Pekka Kuusisto will again perform music by Benjamin Britten.

    • Benjamin Britten (1913–1976 )
