Works by Beethoven and Schubert
Paavo Järvi and Janine Jansen, a pairing that promises musical experiences of the highest calibre every time, especially when, as here, it is combined with absolute highlights of the classical repertoire! The long-standing Artistic Director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen conducts Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 4 written in 1816, dubbed his ›Tragic‹ – a sobriquet that probably refers primarily to the minor key that Schubert, then aged 19, used in a symphony for the first time. While the most serious of his symphonies, it does not get too tragic, and the second movement in particular is characterized by a soaring beauty. The orchestra’s 2009 CD of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Järvi and Jansen received high praise from critics and is still considered exemplary today. Deutschlandfunk hailed it as a »masterpiece of interpretation«. The monumental work left the audience at the premiere bewildered – there were simply too many new ideas! It was not until 1844, when it was revived by Joseph Joachim – later a close friend of Brahms – that the concerto finally achieved a breakthrough. Its technical and musical difficulty continues to present a challenge today.
