Rie Koyama

Born in 1991 in Stuttgart and raised in Baden Wurttemburg, bassoonist Rie Koyama comes from a Japanese musical family. She received her first bassoon lessons from her father at the age of 9 and at 10 gave her first international performances. Rie Koyama plays her instrument with a degree of intensity only rarely heard. To date, this young musician has received first prize in well over twenty major competitions including The Muri Competition and the German Music Competition. In 2013 she came second in the ARD International Music Competition in the category Bassoon (a first prize was not awarded) and also won the special prize for the best interpretation of the commissioned work.

Rie Koyoma was the Jürgen Ponto Foundation scholarship winner and also received the Rohm Music Foundation (Japan) Scholarship. In 2012 she won a one-year scholarship from the German foundation ›Musikleben‹. A soloist in great demand, she has already performed with renowned international orchestras such as the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, the Osaka Symphony Orchestra and the Polish Chamber Orchestra.

In addition, she has performed as bassoonist with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under Dennis Russell Davis and Michael Hofstetter as well as with the South West German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim under Sebastian Tewinkel and has been principal bassoon with The Deutsche Kammer­philharmonie Bremen since 2015.
