Matthew Hunt

Clarinet · principal

Matthew Hunt began his musical education as a chorister in the Lichfield Cathedral Choir and later studied the clarinet at the Guildhall School in London and in Paris. He is known today especially for the vocal quality of his playing.

He joined The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in 2007. He has also performed and regularly appears with other orchestras, including the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra or the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. As an active chamber musician, he appears regularly with partners such as Pekka Kuusisto, Nicolas Altstaedt, the Belcea String Quartet or the Vienna Piano Trio. His recording of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet quintet with the Elias String Quartet was hailed by the BBC Music Magazine as a benchmark recording.

One of his favourite pastimes apart from music is bathing in the sea, preferably the Atlantic.
