The musicians had their reasons for this. Above all, their own artistic motivation was the focal point; the orchestra worked for the most part with no conductor at all. Beginning in the mid-80s the musicians strived to specialize in certain periods and thus sought out alternating artistic specialists - in order to secure themselves against the influence of one particular artist and to continually derive new inspiration. Every work in their repertoire should be interpreted as authentically as possible.
