| Sergio Azzolini, born in Bolzano in 1967, studied under Romano Santi at the Claudio Monteverdi Conservatory of Music in his native city, then continued his studies until 1989 with Klaus Thunemann at the State University of Music in Hanover. During this time he was principal bassoon with the European Community Youth Orchestra. He won several prestigious competitions, among them the Carl Maria von Weber and ARD competitions. He also enjoyed success with the Ma'alot Quintet, of which he was a member for ten years. In addition to his solo appearances, Sergio Azzolini is currently a member of the Maurice Bourgue Trio and devotes himself intensively to work with his own ensemble, Il Proteo. For several years Sergio Azzolini has concentrated extensively on early music performed on period instruments. He plays Baroque bassoon with the continuo group of the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges under Christophe Coin and appears as a soloist with the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca. He took up the position of artistic director of the Kammerakademie Potsdam at the beginning of the 2002/2003 season. Following his tenure as professor at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts in Stuttgart, Sergio Azzolini has taught bassoon and chamber music at the University of Music in Basel since 1998. |  |
