| Program
| The human voice as an additional expressive vehicle in a symphony — Beethoven had long been sympathetic to this idea. With the Ninth, the time had come. Dissonances must be overcome, however, before the song of joy is heard. Along the way, the work breaks through all formal boundaries. The public reception did not support it, however; ›monstrous‹ and ›trivial‹ were the more innocuous pronouncements. People smiled at the first performance in Leipzig. Sixty-five years after the premiere, Hans von Bülow conducted the symphony twice in succession. Nevertheless, more and more conductors wanted to present the exceptional work. In the meantime, the Ninth has become the standard program for important holidays and commemorative occasions. Thomas Mann advocated the ›withdrawal‹ of the classic opus so that the idea and the music would not become hackneyed. The best argument for the magnificent work is its concentration on musical power. It requires no further occasion. Beethoven is in the best of hands with Paavo Järvi.
