| The benefit concerts of the German President have a long tradition. Richard von Weizsäcker hosted the first benefit concert at the Berlin Philharmonie in 1988. Since then, renowned soloists and German orchestras have performed for charitable purposes — Anne-Sophie Mutter, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Carlos Kleiber, and Sir Simon Rattle, to name but a few. The benefit concert has been presented twice a year in the federal states by turns since 2006; it will take place in Bremen for the first time in 2008. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen will perform the Brahms Double Concerto and Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. Following the concert, President Horst Köhler and Bremen's mayor, Jens Böhrnsen, will host a reception for all concert guests in the Glocke. The President and the city of Bremen will divide the proceeds from the concert, with each designating a purpose for their share. Bremen is donating its share of the concert proceeds to the Haifa Arts Foundation for the anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel 60 years ago. This cultural foundation has supported projects to promote understanding between Jews, Arabs, Christians, and Druze for 30 years. President Köhler specified ›Aktion Sühnezeichen/Friedensdienste‹ for his share of the concert proceeds.
