›INVENTIO 2008‹ to Albert Schmitt

The distinguished jury under chairman Dr. Hans Bäßler, Vice-President of the German Music Council, has recognized two figures from musical life this year for their outstanding efforts on behalf of general music education. Ernst Elitz, founding Director of Deutschlandradio, and Albert Schmitt, Managing Director of The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, have received the special award ›Responsibility for Music in Society.‹

»Ernst Elitz has been honored for his dedication to the widespread dissemination of musical content. His excellent programming has provided a home for musical development within one of the foremost institutions in the German media landscape,« comments jury member Asmus J. Hintz.

Albert Schmitt has received the special award for his commitment to cultural groundwork. »Albert Schmitt deserves great credit for his dedication to cultural and musical education. Through the Kammerphilharmonie's move to the Gesamtschule-Ost in Bremen's socially disadvantaged district of Osterholz-Tenever, he has made an unprecedented collaboration possible between professional musicians and young people,« says Dr. Hans Bäßler, Vice-President of the German Music Council and jury chairman.

For many years, the Managing Director of The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen has developed and promoted music education projects including ›Inventions,‹ ›Musical Paper Chase,‹ and successful programs such as ›Response‹ and ›Melody of Life.‹ Within the unique situation of the shared accommodation of the orchestra and school, he has implemented his concept of the ›Future Lab‹ through strong personal commitment. A first-rate rehearsal and recording space in a seemingly ›inappropriate‹ environment has become a cultural center with tremendous appeal. The activities of The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in the Gesamtschule-Ost, which are essentially developed jointly with Albert Schmitt, see music as a catalyst that encourages encounters between various sectors of society, such as business, academia, the media, education, and social services, as well as different cultures and religions. Culture thus becomes an engine for development which can help improve the living conditions of individuals and communities.

The current highlight among the numerous joint projects of the Future Lab is the staged performance of the spoken opera ›Faust II‹ by composer Karsten Gundermann. Along with guest stars Dominique Horwitz and Etta Scollo, 400 students and The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen will present this unique version of ›Faust II‹ in an open-air production on 11 and 12 June 2009, assisted by many individuals and institutions from the district of Osterholz-Tenever.

This is the fifth time that the German Music Council and the 100 Years of YAMAHA Foundation have honored innovative music education projects with the INVENTIO Award. The goal of the award is to call attention to the importance of general music education for social development. The INVENTIO Award supports innovations in music education and provides active encouragement for the successful development of new projects.
