| A family summit on the threshold of an epoch, a competition between generations and talents. Composing canons was a basic exercise in Bach Senior's normal routine and sphere of influence. The results ranged from extremely simple to highly complex forms. Johann Sebastian regarded Wilhelm Friedemann as his legitimate successor, but his second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, became more famous. When the name Bach was mentioned in his day, people thought of him. While Wilhelm Friedemann carried on the Baroque legacy as a leading organ virtuoso, Carl Philipp Emanuel opened the door to classicism and the middle-class concert public. His compositions are characterized by individual expression and a vehemently insistent spirit.
