| The Prometheus motif, the new man as world creator was long a central theme in Beethoven's work. The composer struck a new symphonic tone in his Seventh Symphony. The revolution became a quotation in the march motif. The work no longer ends in lofty, restrained visions of truth and goodness. Until the Finale, contrasts and controversies are carried to extremes and call the form into question. The listener encounters a seeker in Schumann's Symphony No. 2. The magic of the opening is heard in groping, circling movements. We experience musical orientation as a search for identity. In Hindemith's Schwanendreher, German melodies from the Middle Ages come up against harmonic concepts of modernism. Romantic, vivid songs are given a new garb of formal austerity.
