| A malicious comment by the cultural philosopher Theodor Adorno hung over the musical legacy of Jean Sibelius for many years. No one other than followers of Schoenberg could laugh at a statement like ›Symphonies are not a thousand lakes, even if they have a thousand holes.‹ Since then, however, music which is felt has better prospects than constructed music. Sibelius's Violin Concerto is recognized as a highly demanding, melodically rich facet of late Romanticism. For a long time, Beethoven's Consecration of the House unjustly had a difficult time outside of inaugural ceremonies. Now the overture is acknowledged to be one of the ›most consummate‹ in the repertoire. Beethoven's Fifth is undisputed as the ›symphony of symphonies.‹
